Run-Forrest-Run

Have you ever met someone at an event who wanted to talk your ear off, and you were so bored, disengaged, and/or ready to “Run Forrest Run”?

Yes, from time to time, chances are you’ll meet someone with whom you don’t seem to have anything in common.  It could also be the case where you’ve concluded the chit-chat and pleasantries, and you want to move on.  However, you’re just not sure how to do so without being rude.

Here are 3 ways to gracefully make an exit:

  1. You can say, “I don’t want to dominate all your time, and I appreciate getting to visit with you.  Enjoy the event!
  2. Are you gaining or losing credibility from the onset?

You can say, “It was nice meeting you.  I have to excuse myself.”  You don’t have to say you’re going to the restroom, but with a phrase such as “I have to excuse myself”, you are implying that’s where you’re going.  Thus, be sure to head to the restroom.  Do not stop en route to the restroom and carry on a conversation with someone else as your new acquaintance may be watching you (in which case your credibility and genuineness will fly out the door – whoosh!).

  3. You can also say, “Before we get seated, I need to speak with someone.  I enjoyed meeting you, and I hope you have a good time at the event!
